Geoffrey Payne (born c. 1957) is an Australian classical trumpeter from Sydney. Payne began his career playing the cornet in his father's brass band and the Willoughby Band. At age 12, Payne earned a scholarship to the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. In 1976, Payne joined the ABC Training Orchestra and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Payne relocated to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) in 1979 and was appointed Principal Trumpet in 1986. Payne won the ABC Instrumental and Vocal Competition in 1983 and First Prize at the 22nd International Trumpet Competition in Budapest in 1984. Payne performed with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and served as Guest Principal Trumpet for the San Diego Symphony. His recordings feature concertos by Alexander Arutiunian, Henri Tomasi, and Richard Mills. In 2010, Payne performed the musical piece “Battle Concerto” with jazz musician James Morrison.
