David Porcelijn, born January 7, 1947 in Achtkarspelen, Netherlands, is a Dutch composer and conductor. He studied flute, composition, and conducting at the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague, specializing in authentic performance practice of the baroque and classical periods. He won a scholarship to study conducting and composition in Geneva. Porcelijn has conducted numerous orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. Notable positions include chief conductor and artistic director of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. He has recorded extensively, including the complete Beethoven symphonies with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra for ABC Classics. His recordings have won awards such as the 1994 ARIA Award for Best Classical Album for Ross Edwards Orchestral Works with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Dene Olding, and Stuart Challender.
