Jan Willem van Otterloo, born on December 27, 1907, in Winterswijk, Netherlands, was a Dutch conductor, cellist, and composer. He studied composition and cello at the Conservatory of Amsterdam before joining the Utrecht Stedelijk Orkest as a cellist in 1932. He became its first conductor in 1937 but faced a one-year ban post-World War II for his involvement with the German propaganda channel Europasender. He returned to the orchestra in 1946 and later led the Residentie Orkest in The Hague from 1949 until 1973. During this time, he made numerous recordings with orchestras like the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Concertgebouw Orchestra. He conducted the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra from 1967 to 1970 and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra from 1971 until his death on July 27, 1978.
