The Ghetto Brothers, a gang and music group founded in New York City's South Bronx in the late 1960s, were motivated to uplift young Latino and Black men in their community. The group was led by Benjamin Melendez and included his brother Victor Melendez on bass. Their first album, Power-Fuerza, was released in 1971 under Salsa Records, with local informal distribution and later re-released on CD. The Ghetto Brothers were known for their involvement in politics, particularly the Puerto Rico independence movement, and were associated with the then-new Puerto Rican Socialist Party. The group's music career included notable singles such as "I Saw A Tear" and "Got This Happy Feeling / Girl From The Mountain" (2012).
