Jennifer Castle was born in Ontario, Canada, where she established herself as a Polaris Prize-nominated folksinger with albums like Pink City. Before finding success, Castle traveled frequently, spending time in European cities like London and Canadian cities like Vancouver before returning home to Toronto. Under the artist name Castlemusic, she made her musical debut with the 2006 concert album Live at the Music Gallery and the 2008 studio release You Can't Take Anyone. In 2011, she discontinued using her alias and, instead, released Castlemusic under her birth name of Jennifer Castle. That same year, she also scored a short film about Mingan Archipelago National Park Reserve. Pink City followed in 2014, featuring string arrangements from Owen Pallett. Operating under the pseudonym Final Fantasy, Pallett had previously won the Polaris Music Prize in 2006. Pink City received a shortlist nomination for the Polaris Music Prize, as well, although the album ultimately lost the award to Buffy Sainte-Marie's Power in the Blood. Angels of Death and Monarch Season arrived in 2018 and 2020, respectively. Four years later, Castle's "Blowing Kisses" appeared in an episode of the TV show The Bear. The song became a viral hit, appearing on the Top 200 Shazam charts in Canada (number 55), America (number 45), Ireland (number 56), and the UK (number 128).
