Wilburt "Red" Prysock nació el 2 de febrero de 1926 en Greensboro, Carolina del Norte. Aprendió a tocar el saxofón durante su servicio en el ejército de EE.UU. y se dio a conocer como miembro del grupo de Tiny Bradshaw, contribuyendo con el solo de saxofón principal a su éxito "Soft" en 1952. Prysock firmó un contrato con Mercury Records en 1954 y se dio a conocer con el éxito instrumental "Hand Clappin'" en 1955. Publicó varios álbumes, entre ellos Battle Royal, Swing Softly Red y Rock 'N Roll. A lo largo de su carrera, colaboró con artistas notables como Tiny Grimes, Roy Milton, Cootie Williams y su hermano Arthur Prysock. Prysock falleció el 19 de julio de 1993 en Chicago a la edad de 67 años.
