Terry Gilkyson was an American folk singer and songwriter born Hamilton Henry Gilkyson on June 17, 1916, in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. He attended St. George's School in Rhode Island and served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. In 1947, he married Jane Haughton and relocated to California to begin a career as a folk singer. He wrote the track "The Cry of the Wild Goose", which became a hit recording for Frankie Laine in 1950. In 1956, Gilkyson established the ensemble The Easy Riders with Richard Dehr and Frank Miller. The group recorded the million-selling single "Marianne" and co-wrote the track "Memories Are Made of This", which was popularized by Dean Martin. In the 1960s, Gilkyson worked for Walt Disney Studios, composing for films and the series The Wonderful World of Disney. He received an Academy Award nomination for the song "The Bare Necessities" from the 1967 film The Jungle Book. Gilkyson died on October 15, 1999, in Austin, Texas.
