Tomás Ó Canainn was born in 1930 in Pennyburn, a suburb of Derry, Ireland. He was a multi-instrumentalist specializing in uilleann pipes and accordion, as well as a singer, composer, and writer. In the late 1960s, he co-founded the traditional Irish music group Na Fili with Matt Cranitch and Tom Barry. Following the death of Seán Ó Riada in 1971, Tomás Ó Canainn took over his role teaching uilleann pipes and sean-nós singing at Cork's school of music. He conducted workshops on various musical traditions and published several books on Irish music and poetry. Notable albums include With Pipe and Song (1980) and The Pennyburn Piper Presents: Uilleann Pipes (1998). Tomás Ó Canainn continued performing internationally until his death on September 15, 2013.
