Pierre-Alain Volondat is a French pianist and composer born on July 28, 1962, in Vouzon. He began piano studies at age seven and attended the Conservatoire d'Orléans before moving to the Conservatoire de Paris in 1979. By 1982, Volondat had earned three first prizes in harmony, chamber music, and piano. He achieved a major international breakthrough in 1983 at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, winning the first prize of piano, the Queen Fabiola Prize, the Public Prize, and the Vermeil Medal. His career has included performances throughout Belgium, France, and Japan, with a repertoire spanning from Bach to Xenakis. His discography includes the 1995 album Treize barcarolles and the 2007 release Clara et Robert Schumann. In 2008, he mentored Alexandre Kantorow, who later won the gold medal at the International Tchaikovsky Competition. After retiring from his performance career, Volondat became a teacher at the Conservatoire de Montmorency.
