Leonid Borisovich Kogan was a Soviet violinist born on November 14, 1924, in Yekaterinoslav, Ukraine. He began studying violin with Abram Yampolsky in Moscow at age ten and made his debut in 1941 performing the Brahms Violin Concerto. Kogan received the first prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 1951 and began teaching at the Moscow Conservatory in 1952. He performed international solo tours starting in 1955. Kogan’s repertoire included various concerti, and he formed a trio with Emil Gilels and Mstislav Rostropovich. His recordings included J.S. Bach's Violin Sonatas and Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto. Kogan was appointed a People's Artist of the USSR in 1964 and received the Lenin Prize in 1965. His discography featured the collection Les Introuvables de Leonid Kogan. Kogan died of a heart attack on December 17, 1982, in Mytishchi. He was buried in Novodevichy Cemetery.
