Hermann Max was a German choral conductor and church musician born in 1941 in Goslar. He served as Church Music Director at the Christuskirche in Dormagen until 2006. In 1977, he founded the Dormagen Youth Choir, which became the basis of the Rhenish Choir and the Baroque orchestra The Small Concert in 1985. Max recorded over 100 albums focusing on the Bach family and Georg Philipp Telemann. In 1992, he established the festival Early Music Knechtsteden, which he directed until 2023. Awards included the Georg Philipp Telemann Prize in 1998 and the Bach Medal in 2008.
