The Medieval Ensemble of London was a British vocal and instrumental ensemble specializing in medieval and Renaissance music, founded in the late 1970s by brothers Peter Davies and Timothy Davies. The ensemble focused primarily on secular works from the 15th century, particularly the Franco-Flemish repertoire, including compositions by Josquin Desprez, Heinrich Isaac, Johannes Ockeghem, and Guillaume Dufay, and made complete recordings of the secular works of Dufay and Ockeghem. The group also explored 14th-century music with recordings dedicated to Guillaume de Machaut and Matteo da Perugia. Following controversial musicological studies in the late 1970s and early 1980s suggesting that secular songs before 1480 were not performed with instrumental accompaniment, many ensembles altered their practices or disbanded, and The Medieval Ensemble of London ceased activities in 1985.
