Gotthold Schwarz, born on August 12, 1952, in Zwickau, Germany, is a German singer and conductor. Raised with early exposure to music through his father Hans Schwarz, who was the cantor of the St. Paul's Church in Zwickau-Marienthaler, Schwarz joined the Leipzig Thomanerchor but left after nine months due to homesickness. He initially trained as a bookseller before pursuing church music studies at the Dresden University of Church Music and later studied organ, singing, and conducting at the Hans-Joachim Rotzsch at the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy University of Music and in Leipzig. Schwarz began his career as a soloist, performing extensively with notable ensembles and conductors such as John Eliot Gardiner, Philippe Herreweghe, and Peter Schreier. He released several albums, including Der Tod Jesu (2011). He founded the Leipzig Music Society in 1990. Schwarz served as Thomaskantor of the Leipzig Thomanerchor from August 2016 until his retirement in June 2021.
