Ethel Leginska, born on April 13, 1886, in Hull, England, was a pianist and composer. She began her musical education under Professor McFarren and later studied at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt with James Kwast. In 1902, Leginska gave her first concert at London's Queen's Hall, performing Henselt's concerto under Sir Henry Wood. She adopted the stage name Leginska to enhance her career prospects. After marrying Roy Emerson Whittern in 1907 and having a son, Cedric, they divorced in 1916. In 1913, she debuted at New York's Aeolian Hall and decided to settle in the United States. Her compositions include a string quartet inspired by Rabindranath Tagore's poetry and the symphonic poem "Beyond the Fields We Know". Leginska also pioneered as a conductor, leading major orchestras such as the New York Symphony at Carnegie Hall in 1925. She passed away on February 26, 1970, in Los Angeles.
