Fritz Ludwig Lehmann, born on May 17, 1904, in Mannheim, Germany, was a conductor known for his versatile repertoire spanning from Baroque to contemporary works. He studied at the University of Music in Mannheim and later at the universities of Heidelberg and Göttingen, debuting as a pianist in 1918. Lehmann served as choir conductor and orchestra leader at institutions including the Municipal Theater in Göttingen and the Folkwangschule in Essen. He was General Music Director at Bad Pyrmont and Wuppertal and also directed notable productions such as Handel's Tolomeo and Teseo. Lehmann pioneered period-instrument performances and founded the Berliner Motettenchor (Berlin Motet Choir). His recordings, including works by Bach, Brahms, and Mozart, remain influential. Lehmann died on March 30, 1956, during the intermission of a performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion at Munich, succumbing to a heart attack at age 51.
