Bronisław Gimpel was a Polish-American violinist and teacher born on January 29, 1911, in Lemberg, Austria-Hungary. He studied with Moritz Wolfsthal at the Lwów Conservatory and with Robert Pollak in Vienna from 1922 to 1926. Gimpel made his debut with the Goldmark concerto and the Wiener Sinfonie-Orchester in March 1925. Following a triumphant 1926 tour of Italy, where he performed for King Victor Emmanuel III and Pope Pius XI, he toured South America and Europe. In 1937, Gimpel emigrated to the United States and was appointed concertmaster of the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Otto Klemperer. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he worked as concertmaster for the ABC Radio Symphony and resumed his solo career. He co-founded the Warsaw Piano Quintet in 1962 and later held professorships at the University of Connecticut and the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. His recorded repertoire includes violin concertos by Bruch, Goldmark, and Dvořák. Gimpel died on May 1, 1979, in Los Angeles.
