Matthias Loibner, born on May 2, 1969, in Graz, Austria, is a hurdy-gurdy player and composer. Until the age of 20, he played piano, guitar, and trombone before studying classical and jazz composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. Since 1990, he has focused primarily on the hurdy-gurdy, performing in a variety of musical styles, including Austrian folk, world music, electronic music, and jazz. Among his notable achievements, Loibner won 1stt prize at the Concours des vielles et cornemuses of the Rencontres internationales de Luthiers et Maîtres Sonneurs in 1994. He has collaborated with artists such as Nataša Mirković-De Ro and Ross Daly and has released several albums, including Vielle À Roue (2006) and Lichtungen (2015).
