Clifford Raymond "Cliff" Carlisle, born May 6, 1903 in Spencer County, Kentucky, was an American country musician known for pioneering the use of the Hawaiian steel guitar in the genre. Raised on a tobacco farm, he learned guitar and was influenced by Frank Ferera's Hawaiian music. Carlisle began his career with Wilber Ball as the first blue yodeling duo in 1924. In 1930, they debuted on WHAS-AM radio in Louisville, leading to early recordings for Champion Records and Gennett Records. His first hit was "Shanghai Rooster Yodel" (1931). After signing with American Record Corporation, he released hits like "Get Her by the Tail on a Down Hill Grade" and "You’ll Miss Me When I’m Gone", later covered by Elvis Presley as "Just Because". Carlisle passed away on April 5, 1983 in Lexington, Kentucky.
