David Harrison Macon, known professionally as Uncle Dave Macon, was born on October 7, 1870, in Smartt Station, Tennessee. He was an American old-time banjo player, singer, songwriter, and comedian. Macon learned to play the banjo in 1885 from circus comedian Joel Davidson. In 1924, he made his first recordings for Vocalion Records with fiddler Sid Harkreader. Throughout his career, he performed extensively on the Loew's Vaudeville circuit and became the first star of the Grand Ole Opry in the latter half of the 1920s. Macon was formerly a member of the Fruit Jar Drinkers and often performed with his sons, who accompanied him on guitar. He passed away on March 22, 1952.
