Maria Tănase was a Romanian singer and actress born on 25 September 1913 in Bucharest. She achieved professional recognition for a musical style spanning traditional Romanian music, tango, and operetta. Tănase debuted at the “Cărăbuș” Theatre in 1934 and recorded her first folk songs in 1937. Her recording career includes the tracks “Cine iubește și lasă” (1937) and “Leliță cârciumăreasă” (1939). During World War II, she toured with George Enescu to perform for soldiers on the battlefield. Her filmography includes the productions Romania (1947) and Ciulinii Bărăganului (1958). Tănase received the State Prize (1955) and was named an Artistă Emerită in 1957. She died on 22 June 1963.
