Mircea Baniciu, born on July 31, 1949, in Timișoara, Romania, is a Romanian singer and songwriter. He initially gained prominence as the lead singer of the rock group Phoenix. In 1977, when Phoenix illegally fled to West Germany, Baniciu chose to stay behind and pursue a solo career. His debut EP, Călătorie, was released in 1979. Throughout the 1980s, he released several albums, including Tristeți Provinciale (1981) and Ploaia (1984). In 1992, Baniciu formed a folk supergroup with Mircea Vintilă, Vlady Cnejevici, and Florian Pittiș. Following the Romanian Revolution, he rejoined Phoenix but left permanently in 2007 due to internal disagreements.
