Las Coon Creek Girls, un grupo femenino de música folk de los Apalaches, fueron creadas en 1937 por John Lair para su espectáculo Renfro Valley Barn Dance. La formación original incluía a las hermanas Lily May y Rosie Ledford del condado de Powell, Kentucky, junto con Esther "Violet" Koehler de Indiana, Evelyn "Daisy" Lange de Ohio y Norma Madge Mullins de Renfro Valley, Kentucky. Su primera actuación tuvo lugar en el Cincinnati Music Hall. En marzo de 1938, grabaron su álbum debut con Vocalion Records, con canciones como "Little Birdie" y "Pretty Polly". La banda obtuvo un reconocimiento significativo cuando actuaron en la Casa Blanca para el Presidente Franklin D. Roosevelt y los Reyes de Inglaterra el 8 de junio de 1939.
