Pyotr Konstantinovich Leshchenko was a singer renowned as the “King of Russian Tango” and a popular chanson singer in the Soviet Union from the 1930s to the 1950s. He learned guitar informally and displayed perfect pitch from an early age. His breakthrough came in 1930 when he performed solo at a club for Russian émigrés in Riga, singing Gypsy songs that resonated with audiences, which led to tours across Europe, including London, where one of his concerts was broadcast by the BBC. In 1935, Leșcenco opened the Leshchenko restaurant in Bucharest, performing tangos, Gypsy ballads, and other popular songs. He passed away on July 16, 1954, in Târgu Ocna, Romania.
