Malcolm Ronald "Mal" Sondock was born on July 4, 1934, in Houston, Texas. He began his career as a disc jockey at the age of 17, working for several small radio stations and a record label while studying at college. In 1957, after joining the U.S. Army, Sondock served in Germany and organised dance events featuring recorded music, contributing to the establishment of early discotheques in the country. His breakthrough came when he joined Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) as a replacement for Chris Howland in the early 1960s. He became well-known with his radio shows such as Montagnachmittagsmelodie, Diskothekenbummel, and later, Die Diskothek im WDR. His signature greeting, "Ihr alter Jockdiskey Em-A-El," became iconic among listeners. In addition to his radio career, he released several German-language singles in the 1960s, including "Weil Ich Immer Noch Der Alte Bin" and "Das Find' Ich Nicht Schön Von Dir / Ich Hab' Kein Geld". He also appeared in a few films, such as Stadt Ohne Mitleid (1961). He was involved with the production of music sampler albums, discovering Michael Holm and producing his initial singles. In 2007, Bear Family Records released his compilation album Liebe Auf Den Ersten Blick. Mal Sondock passed away on June 9, 2009, in Cologne, Germany, leaving behind a legacy that included contributions to the growth of discotheques, radio broadcasting, and pop music.
