Kulcha is an Australian R&B band formed in Sydney, Australia, in 1993, consisting of four vocalists: Joe Fidow, Richard Matila, Eric Palu, and Jay Whitmore, all of whom had Samoan or Māori ancestry. Their debut single "Shaka Jam" was released in May 1994 via East West Records, reaching number 7 on the ARIA Singles Chart and number 8 in New Zealand. The band's self-titled debut album followed in September 1994, peaking at number 13 in Australia and number 5 in New Zealand. It featured the singles "Don't Be Shy" and "Fly Girl", both of which charted in the top 10 in New Zealand. The album was nominated for Best Pop Release and "Shaka Jam" was nominated for the Highest Selling Single award at the 1995 ARIA Music Awards and the group was also nominated for Best New Act. At the height of their career, Kulcha's music featured on episodes of the TV series Heartbreak High in 1994, 1995, and 1997. Their second studio album, Take Your Time, was released in May 1997, hitting the Top 40 in Australia.
