Heinz-Jürgen Gottschalk was born on May 16, 1948, in Erfurt, Germany. He began his music career as a yodeling folk musician before transitioning to rock music. In 1964 he founded the amateur band Spotlights with Jürgen Kerth. The band later renamed itself Rampenlichter and disbanded due to political pressures in 1966. Gottschalk formed Nautiks in 1968, releasing notable compositions such as "Wir gehen am Meer" and "Lichter in deinen Augen". After serving in the National People's Army from 1972-1973, he joined Horst Krüger Band and later founded Neue Generation. His solo career began in 1984 with the album Wenn ich auf dem Rücken lieg released through Amiga. In 1985, Gottschalk defected to West Germany during a performance in West Berlin. He returned to East Germany in the mid-1990s and released several albums including Blue Room - Spacemusic (2010) and V (2010).
