Formel I, an East German heavy metal group, was founded on January 1, 1981, in East Berlin by Norbert Schmidt, Paule Fincke, and Wolle Densky. The band emerged from Joco Dev and initially included bassist Detlef Dudziak and guitarist Andrej Horvath, who was later replaced by Bodo Kommnick and then Reinhold "Chris" Heß. Formel I gained early traction with their German lyrics featuring Berliner Dialekt. Their breakthrough came with the release of "Willste nicht uffstehn" in 1982, which reached number five on the Wertungssendung Beatkiste charts. The band's first LP, Live im Stahlwerk, released in 1986, was the first heavy metal album from the DDR. Notable songs include "Eddi," "Sie will weg," and "Der Fußballfan". Formel I disbanded in 1987 after several members applied to emigrate. In 1999, they reunited for a tour but ceased live performances by 2000. Their legacy includes the compilation Edelrocker, released in 2008.
