British vocal duo Scarlet, originally from Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, England, was formed in the 1980s by Cheryl Parker and Jo Youle. The band initially included Joanna Fox as well. Parker, Youle, and Fox met during their secondary school years in Hull, where they formed their first group. In 1991, the trio moved to London and signed with Chrysalis Music. They released their debut singles "Piccadilly in the Rain (I'll Be There)" and "Shine On Me Now" in 1992 under Haven Records, though neither charted successfully. The following year, they signed with WEA and began recording their first album. In 1994, Joanna Fox left the band, leading Parker and Youle to continue as a duo. Their breakthrough came with "Independent Love Song", released in late 1994, which peaked at number 12 on the UK charts in January 1995. This success preceded their debut album Naked, released in February 1995, which reached number 59 on the UK albums chart. The album featured "I Wanna Be Free (To Be With Him)" and "Love Hangover", which charted at numbers 21 and 54 respectively. In 1996, they released the single "Bad Girl" but it did not achieve significant success. Their second album Chemistry, released in 1996, failed to chart, leading WEA to drop them from their label. The duo disbanded shortly after. "Independent Love Song" was featured on the soundtrack of the 1996 film Bed of Roses.
