John Michael O'Keefe, known as Johnny O'Keefe, was born on January 19, 1935, in Bondi Junction, Sydney, Australia. He began his music career in the early 1950s, influenced by American singer Johnnie Ray and performing at local dances. His breakthrough came in 1956 when he formed Australia's first rock 'n' roll band, The Dee Jays. O'Keefe gained national prominence with hits like "Wild One" (1958), "Shout!", and "She's My Baby". He released over 50 singles, 50 EPs, and 100 albums during his career. He became the first Australian artist to make the local Top 40 charts in March 1958 with "Wild One", and was the first Australian rock 'n' roll performer to tour the United States, first visiting in October 1959 and returning for a promotional tour in February 1960. O'Keefe had twenty-nine Top 40 hits in Australia between 1958 and 1973. He also worked as a radio and television entertainer and presenter. O'Keefe died on October 6, 1978, from a drug overdose.
