Guy Johnston, born on May 7, 1981, in Harpenden, England, is a British cellist. He began his musical journey at King's College, Cambridge, as a chorister and later attended Chetham's School of Music in Manchester. In 2000, he won the BBC Young Musician of the Year award, which marked his breakthrough moment. Following this achievement, Johnston made his concerto debut at The Proms in 2001, performing Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto with Leonard Slatkin and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He has since performed with leading orchestras worldwide, including the London Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic, and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. His notable recordings include David Matthews’ Concerto in Azzurro, released on the Chandos label in 2009, which was nominated for a Gramophone Award. Johnston has also been recognized with awards such as the Classical BRIT Award for Young British Classical Performer in 2002.
