Martyn Bates, born in 1957 in England, is a singer and musician known for his diverse musical output. Growing up with English folk music, Bates later became influenced by punk and post-punk scenes. He began his career releasing experimental industrial music tapes as Migraine Inducers before forming the duo Eyeless In Gaza with Peter Becker in January 1980. The group released six albums on Cherry Red Records between 1981 and 1985, including Photographs as Memories and Caught in Flux, known for their unconventional instrumentation and Bates’s distinctive vocals. After Eyeless In Gaza went on hiatus in 1985, Bates focused on solo work, releasing albums like Love Smashed On A Rock. He also contributed to Derek Jarman's soundtracks The Garden and The Last of England.
