Emma Matthews, born Emma Lysons in 1970 in Manchester, England, is an Australian lyric coloratura soprano known for her operatic roles. She grew up across several locations including Fiji, Vanuatu, and Perth. After studying musical theatre at the Western Australian Conservatorium of Music, she switched to opera and made her professional debut in 1991 with West Australian Opera. Matthews joined Opera Australia in 1993 and has performed extensively across the country. Her repertoire includes works by Mozart, Haydn, Handel, Brahms, Poulenc, Villa Lobos, and Mahler. She released her album In Monte Carlo in 2009 under ABC Classics. Matthews has received numerous awards, including nine Helpmann Awards and nine Green Room Awards. In 2017, she was appointed Head of Classical Voice at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2023 for her contributions to the performing arts.
