Torpus & The Art Directors, a folk band from Hamburg, was founded in 2009 as a solo project by Sönke Torpus. Originally from Niebüll in North Frisia, Sönke Torpus began making music with Melf Petersen and Felix Roll in a rock band before relocating to Hamburg after high school. The name “Torpus & the Art Directors” developed from early promotional materials that advertised the group as “Torpus und sein Art Director” prior to a major concert. Also in 2009, they released their first album Five Leaves Left independently. Their second album, From Lost Home to Hope, was released in 2012, under the label Grand Hotel van Cleef. The band's third album, The Dawn Chorus, followed in 2015. In 2018, Melf Petersen left the band. Sönke Torpus also runs "The Bubble" studio and has produced works for various artists including Nichtseattle and Fehlfarben.
