Julius Berger, born in Augsburg, Germany, in 1954, is a cellist and educator. He studied at the Academy of Music in Munich and the Mozarteum in Salzburg, later attending the University of Cincinnati to study with Zara Nelsova and participating in masterclasses led by Mstislav Rostropovitch. At 28, Berger became one of Germany's youngest professors when appointed to the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg. He has taught at various institutions including Sarrebruck, Mayence, and Augsburg, where he currently serves as deputy director of the Leopold Mozart Centre. Known for his international performances and recordings, notably works by Luigi Boccherini, Leonardo Leo, and contemporary composers such as John Cage and Sofia Gubaidulina, Berger has collaborated with prominent figures like Leonard Bernstein and Daniel Harding.. His discography includes albums such as Music for My Cello (2010).
