Gonzalo Grondona, known professionally as Payo Grondona, was born on August 26, 1945, in Playa Ancha, Valparaíso, Chile. He was a singer and musician, known for his contributions to the Nueva Canción Chilena movement. Grondona began his musical journey by learning guitar autodidactically. Grondona's breakthrough came in 1965 when he co-wrote "La muerte de mi hermano" with Orlando Muñoz. In 1970, his debut album El Payo was released. Following the 1973 coup, he went into exile, living in Argentina and Italy. Grondona returned to Chile in 1983 and continued his musical career with albums such as Canto de nuevo (1984). His album, Playa Ancha 1945, was released in 2001. Grondona passed away on January 8, 2014, in Viña del Mar, Chile.
