Stanford Robinson was an English conductor and composer born on July 5, 1904, in Leeds. He studied at the Royal College of Music under Adrian Boult. Robinson served on the staff of the BBC from 1924 to 1966 and was the first chorus master of the Wireless Chorus. He debuted at the Proms in 1929 conducting the piece “On Craig Dhu” and served as assistant conductor of the Proms from 1947 to 1950. Robinson performed at the Royal Opera House, conducting the operas Die Fledermaus and Faust. He served as the chief conductor of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in Australia between 1968 and 1969. His discography included the 1928 recording of the song “In questa reggia” from Turandot and the 1930 recording of Mendelssohn’s Elijah. Robinson received an OBE in 1972. He died on October 25, 1984, in Brighton.
