Nicola Rescigno was an American conductor of Italian origin. He moved to Italy in 1929, where he studied law and music in Rome and Frascati before returning to New York during World War II, later completing studies at the Juilliard School. His conducting debut followed, including a performance of La traviata at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 1943 during an American tour of the Teatro San Carlo. In 1953, he participated in the founding of the Lyric Theatre of Chicago and served as its first music director from 1954 to 1956. He notably collaborated with Maria Callas, conducting her American debut in Norma in 1954. Rescigno later co-founded the Dallas Opera in 1957, serving as artistic director and principal conductor until 1990, where he introduced artists such as Montserrat Caballé and Plácido Domingo to American audiences. He also made his Metropolitan Opera debut in 1978 and conducted La traviata there in the early 1980s. Rescigno died on August 4, 2008, in Viterbo, Italy.
