Ultra-red is a sound art collective founded in 1994 in Los Angeles by AIDS activists Dont Rhine and Marco Larsen. Emerging from their involvement with ACT UP, the group developed a practice combining political organizing with experimental sound work. Their early releases include Second Nature: An Electroacoustic Pastoral (1999) and Structural Adjustments (2000), both issued on Mille Plateaux. Ultra-red’s work is characterized by a politically engaged approach to sound, drawing on traditions of acoustic ecology, collective listening, and activist research.
