Jonathan Lemalu

Jonathan Fa'afetai Lemalu, born in 1976 in New Zealand to Samoan parents, is a bass-baritone opera singer. He studied Law and Music at the University of Otago, graduating with a Bachelor of Laws in 1999, and had his breakthrough winning the gold medal award at the Royal College of Music (RCM) and the Kathleen Ferrier Award in 2002. Lemalu gained international recognition as a co-recipient of the Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording for Benjamin Britten's "Billy Budd" at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards in 2010. He performed in the 2012 New Zealand Festival of the Arts in Wellington and took the part of Te Kumete in the opera Hōhepa by Jenny McLeod. He was awarded the Senior Pacific Artist Award at the Creative New Zealand Arts Pasifika Awards in 2013. Lemalu is a professor of Vocal Studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
