John Cowan, born August 24, 1953 in Ohio, is an American progressive bluegrass vocalist and bass guitarist. He joined New Grass Revival as bassist in 1972 after Ebo Walker's departure. Cowan released his debut solo album Soul'd Out in 1990 under Sugar Hill Records. In 1988, he formed The Sky Kings with Rusty Young of Poco and Bill Lloyd of Foster & Lloyd. He also worked with the Doobie Brothers on their albums as a bassist and vocalist from 1993 to 1995 and again in 2010. Cowan's notable collaborations include work with Travis Tritt, Steve Earle, Garth Brooks, and Wynonna. His album Always Take Me Back was released in 2002. In 2006, he transitioned to Pinecastle Records.
