Leonard Sinclair Hungerford, also known as Bruce Hungerford, born on November 24, 1922, in Korumburra, Victoria, Australia, was an Australian classical pianist who began studying at age twelve under Roy Shepherd at the Melbourne Conservatorium. After winning a scholarship at seventeen, he trained with Ignaz Friedman and Eugene Ormandy, debuting with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at twenty. In 1958, he adopted the name Bruce Hungerford, touring Europe and recording for Vanguard Records, culminating in a 1967 commission to record all Beethoven piano sonatas. Hungerford’s career ended abruptly when he died in a New York traffic collision on January 26, 1977, leaving a legacy of nine Beethoven recordings and a complete set of Brahms, Chopin, and Schubert works on the Vanguard label.
