Johnnie & Joe was an American R&B vocal duo from New York that formed in 1957. The duo was composed of Johnnie Louise Richardson (born June 29, 1935, in Montgomery, Alabama) and Joe Rivers (born March 20, 1937, in Charleston, South Carolina). Their breakthrough came with the single "Over the Mountain; Across the Sea" in 1957, which reached number 3 on the R&B chart and number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. The follow‑up, "I'll Be Spinning", also entered the R&B Top 10 that same year. The duo’s 1958 releases included the singles, "False Love Has Got To Go" and "Warm, Soft And Lovely". They continued to record through the early 1960s with singles such as "I Adore You" and "You Can Always Count On Me". During the 1970s and 1980s, they performed in oldies concerts and released the album Kingdom Of Love in 1982. Richardson died on October 25, 1988, from complications of a stroke, while Rivers passed away on August 26, 2025.
