João Teixeira Guimarães, known as João Pernambuco, was born on November 2, 1883, in Jatobá, Brazil. He moved to Recife at twelve and began learning guitar from local musicians. By his early teens, he started performing professionally. In 1902, Pernambuco relocated to Rio de Janeiro, collaborating with notable musicians like Donga and Pixinguinha. He formed the Grupo do Caxangá, which later became Oito Batutas. His compositions, including "Caboca di Caxangá", gained popularity during the 1914 Carnival. Pernambuco's work often drew from Brazilian folk music, resulting in notable pieces like "Brasileirinho" and "Estrada do sertão". He recorded numerous albums with prominent musicians of his time. Pernambuco passed away on October 16, 1947, in Rio de Janeiro. His contributions were recognized through compilations like The Brazilian Guitar, released posthumously in 2014.
