Franz Marszalek was born in 1900 in Breslau, Germany. He studied at the Schlesische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Breslau. He started his career as a cinema and theater conductor and Kapellmeister for the Schlesische Funkstunde AG and Breslauer Rundfunk. In 1933, Marszalek moved to Berlin where he was active as a conductor and sought-after arranger. From 1949 to 1965, he served as the conductor of the Kölner Rundfunkorchester, setting accents in the area of operetta, light classical music, and upscale light music. He produced early complete recordings of works such as Der Zigeunerbaron by Johann Strauss and Das Land des Lächelns by Franz Lehár, all featuring Peter Anders. Marszalek's recordings are still occasionally heard on radio broadcasts. In 1966, he received the Verdienstkreuz 1. Klasse of the Verdienstorden der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Marszalek passed away in 1975 in Köln.
