The WDR Funkhausorchester Köln, originally known as the WDR Rundfunkorchester Köln until 2014, was founded in 1947 at the Westdeutscher Rundfunk in Cologne. The ensemble traces its roots to several smaller instrumental formations that existed since 1927, including the Leo-Eysoldt-Orchester which played under the direction of Leo Eysoldt. In 1946, Hans Bund was tasked with forming a new orchestra similar to Eysoldt's, but it was soon dissolved to create the WDR Sinfonieorchester. The WDR Funkhausorchester Köln officially began in September 1947 under Hermann Hagestedt and initially performed in makeshift concert halls before moving to the Große Sendesaal of the new Funkhaus Wallrafplatz in 1950. Throughout its history, the orchestra has collaborated with notable figures such as Robert Stolz and Werner Eisbrenner.
