Benno Paul Kusche, born in 1916 in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, was a German operatic baritone. He attended the theatre academy of the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe from 1935 to 1937, where he discovered his talent as a singer, and made his debut at the Heidelberg Opera Festival in 1938. Kusche's career included notable roles such as Beckmesser in Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, which he sang at the Royal Opera House in London under the musical direction of Sir Thomas Beecham in 1951, and performed in guest appearances internationally. He belonged to the Bavarian State Opera from 1946 and was a member of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein from 1958. Throughout his career, Kusche recorded albums including Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (EMI) and Der Zigeunerbaron (EMI / Ariola Eurodisc). He was a holder of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Bavarian Order of Merit. He passed away in 2010.
