Mario Sammarco, born on December 13, 1868, in Palermo, Sicily, was an Italian operatic baritone known for his acting ability. After initial discouragement due to a small voice, he began serious vocal study with Antonio Cantelli and made his professional debut on November 7, 1889, at the Teatro Dal Verme, Milan, in Puccini's Le Villi. Sammarco performed at notable venues including La Scala, Buenos Aires, London, and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, from 1904 to 1919. In New York City, he joined Oscar Hammerstein I’s Manhattan Opera Company from 1908 to 1910. His career included roles such as Gerard in Andrea Chénier and Cascart in Zazà. Sammarco's final operatic appearances were at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples in 1919. He taught singing after retiring from the stage and died on January 24, 1930, in Milan. Notable recordings include his performances with soprano Emma Carelli.
