Boris Romanovich Gmyrya was a Ukrainian singer born on August 5, 1903 in Lebedyn, Russian Empire. He began his career working various jobs before studying civil engineering and vocal training at institutions in Kharkiv. Gmyrya made his operatic debut in 1936 at the Kharkov Opera, performing as Sultan in Zaporozhets za Dunayem. He joined the Kiev Opera in 1939 and performed a variety of roles until 1957, including Boris in Boris Godunov and Prince Gremin in Eugene Onegin. During World War II, Gmyrya remained in occupied Poltava and performed for German audiences. He was awarded the title of People's Artist of the USSR in 1951 and received the Order of Lenin in 1960. Gmyrya released several albums including Концерт Б. Р. Гмыри (1953) and Boris Godunov / Ruslan A Ludmila / Kníže Igor (1955). He passed away on August 1, 1969 in Kyiv.
