Sergei Yakovlevich Lemeshev was a Russian opera singer and director. He began his vocal training in Tver after leaving school in 1914 and later studied at the Moscow Conservatory from 1921 to 1925. Lemeshev’s career advanced significantly after he joined the Bolshoi Theatre in 1931, where he became a leading soloist known for his lyrical tenor. His signature role was Lensky in Eugene Onegin, which he performed extensively. Other notable roles included Tsar Berendei in The Snow Maiden and Nadir in Les pêcheurs de perles. Despite serious health issues, including tuberculosis, Lemeshev continued to perform and record works such as Lakmé and excerpts from operas like The Barber of Seville. He was awarded the title People’s Artist of the USSR in 1950. Lemeshev died on June 1977.
