Isobel Baillie, née Isabella Douglas Baillie, was born on March 9, 1895 in Hawick, Roxburghshire, Scotland. She began her career as a concert singer, making her London debut in 1923 after local success in Manchester. Her breakthrough came with Sir Hamilton Harty, who engaged her for performances of Haydn's The Creation and Handel's Messiah. Baillie focused on oratorio, collaborating frequently with Kathleen Ferrier and performing at nineteen Three Choirs Festivals from 1929 onwards. She toured internationally, including the US, New Zealand, and Europe. Notable recordings include complete versions of Messiah and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. In her later years, Baillie taught at institutions such as the Royal College of Music. She passed away on September 24, 1983.
